Why you should get started with Miles Credit Cards

Hey, you made it here to our brand new website! Kudos to you for taking the first step towards experiencing the next level of indulgence in premium cabins. In this post, we explore three simple reasons why you should start accumulating miles.

  1. You want to fly for FREE!

The most frequent use case for miles is to redeem flight tickets so you can fly for free (except for taxes – these still have to be paid!).

“But in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”
– Benjamin Franklin

Even though you can redeem economy class flights, the most value-for-money way to utilise your miles is to redeem first/business class tickets. Here is a quick table as of 4 July 2024 to illustrate a one-way flight from Singapore (SIN) to Auckland (AKL) on 23 June 2025:

ClassPriceMilesValue of each mile in cents
Economy$1,109.5030,5003.64
Premium Economy$2,369.5051,5004.60
Business$4,919.5068,5007.18
As you can see, ‘Business’ miles are almost double the value of ‘Economy’ miles

By redeeming 68,500 miles instead of spending $4,919.50 on a business class ticket, you are essentially valuing each mile at 7.18 cents. In other words, by spending $17,125 at a reasonable earn rate of 4 miles per dollar, you will accumulate enough miles to redeem a free business class flight worth $4,919.50. Imagine that!

In our case, we managed to earn over 400,000 miles just from our wedding banquet (about 7.5 miles per dollar on average). We will share exactly how we did it in our upcoming posts!

2. You are willing to put in the time and effort to redeem flights

Seats available for miles redemption usually open up one year in advance. It would be best if your work schedule allows you to plan your leaves early or if you are flexible with your travel dates. Otherwise, choosing to travel during the off-season increases your chances of finding more available slots.

For example, we booked our honeymoon trip to NZ about 6 months in advance – in winter, so we avoided the peak season (summer).

This flight was booked in February 2024.

3. You are financially responsible

Many people think credit cards are out to get you – yes, the interest charges and late fees can be intimidating. But if you pay your monthly outstanding bills when due and in full, you have nothing to worry about. In fact, these monthly bill payments help you build up your credit history, something that will come in handy when you need to apply for credit later in life.

If the points above resonate with you, great! If not, fret not because we are here to share our experiences (and mistakes) to guide you along! Let us help you get equipped with the right tools to redeem your first first/business class flight. Anyone can sign up for a credit card and earn miles straightaway, but maximizing the miles earned on every expense is not as straightforward as you might think. Stay tuned for our posts for more tips to help you keep the change!
